The Month Of August
So August is going to be quite a busy month for me.
First and foremost, I have just signed up to Camp NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). Essentially, this means I’m going to try to crank out 1,613 words every day of the month of August. And not just random words either. They have to be in sentences and form part of a story that at least superficially makes sense. I wanted to do this last November but decided I was pitifully out of shape where writing was concerned and needed some practise (in the form of blogging) before I’d be able to even contemplate such an undertaking. I have blogged nowhere near as much as I wanted to and I still feel like I’m woefully inadequate to the task, but I’m going to have a go anyway because well screw it, why not? I’m obviously not going to get to 50,000 words but the project will at least give me a bit of impetus to get words written down. We learn by doing and we certainly learn to write by writing. It should prove to be a lot of fun, as long as I can actually work out what to write about and in what order.
Also on the cards for August is some more weight-losing. Since moving house a month or so ago I haven’t really fatblogged, mainly because I haven’t actually lost any weight (in fact I’ve put a little on). Work has been hellish for about two months now so I haven’t really wanted to either; I haven’t had any meaningful time off in fifteen weeks, and after that length of time you pretty much just want to drink yourself to sleep every night. (Which I haven’t been doing Mother, so don’t worry!) Added to that I’m just getting over the exceptionally ugly cold that has made me feel like, to quote Stephen King, a bit-part player in somebody else’s nightmare for most of the last week and which I am convinced I contracted by going down to the damp and nasty basement at work. But I have most of the next week off which should allow me to recharge some batteries and get back on the straight and narrow, and hopefully start shedding some more pounds. For the record I am currently 15st 9lb, 2lb heavier than I was at the start of May. I believe that some of this is due to using different scales in a different house but in the very best scenario that means I haven’t lost an ounce in two and a half months. Given that I’m going to be spending my evenings feverishly typing and probably only having the time to nibble on cream crackers, I feel good about losing another trouser size before my birthday in November.
Of course both NaNoWriMo and weight loss are going to be put to one side at the beginning of the month because I’m going down south to sunny Brighton to visit Chris and Simon for a long weekend of lovely food and plentiful booze which I am very much looking forward to. They are wonderful hosts and friends of old and they always spoil me when I go to see them, whilst simultaneously mocking my quaint Northern ways. I am also going to try my damnedest to visit Dave Darwent, another old friend and excellent host and cook who again spoils me rotten whenever I visit. Is it just me or have I only developed friendships with people who enable my weakness for overindulgence?
So all in all busy month for Lee. I may be absent from Facebook, Twitter and pretty much the world for a while but I promise I will try to reply to texts in a reasonably timely fashion. If I don’t, then text again. Hopefully by the end of the month I will have a fully-realised novel that I can sell for ridiculous amounts of money and retire from Retail and become a Gentleman of Leisure. And my arse will play the banjo.
