#BEDM Day 6: What On Earth Do You Think You’re Doing?
If you couldn’t answer with your job, how would you answer the question, ‘what do you do’?
When I get home from work, achey and sweaty and dirty and probably cross, or when I’m not working at all, how do I actually try to fill my time? I believe there are five major activities that I carry out.
1. I dick about on the Internet
Top of my list of things I do is fannying about online, tweeting, watching crazy YouTube videos, looking at pictures of cats, reading blogs and tech news sites etc. This takes up far too much of my time and very often I just get tangled up in a wikipedia cycle reading about random stuff, then I turn around and it’s 2am.
2. I try not to consume food
For a large chunk of my adult life I’ve been, well, a chunk. For the last few years, after seeing myself in photos from a wedding and realising just how chuffing massive I’d actually gotten, I’ve been trying to reduce my weight. I’ve dropped about 3 stone (42 lbs, for the benefit of any passing non-Britishers) over that time but I reckon I’ve still got at least another 2 stone (do the maths) to go before I hit my ideal weight. And for nearly a year now I’ve been stuck at the same weight, which is starting to get on my diminished but still visible moobs. So I’m rallying for another big push.
3. I try to consume media
I used to read avidly when I was younger, staying up until dawn, wrapped up in a book. But I’ve gotten out of the habit recently and it is a very bad habit to get out of, so I’m trying to get back into it. I also try to catch up on the vast number of films and TV shows I’ve never seen because of point 1. My attempts in this regard sometimes fail however. Due to point 1.
4. I try to write stuff
I used to write stuff. I won a competition once. I’d love to start again and I do try, but the necessary muscles have atrophied almost to the extent of those a size-zero supermodel. I am trying to blog every so often (this one-a-day thing is helping with that) as a sort of stretching exercise. Work gets in the way though as most of the time I’m just too physically exhausted to settle down and try and bang words together after I get home at shit-o’clock. Also, point 1 can get in the way.
5. I try to sleep
Sleep is very important, both for if you’re trying to loose weight and if you’re trying desperately to maintain your looks in the face of a rapidly-approaching late adolescence. (Cough.) Unfortunately, my body seems to run on a 26-hour clock and no amount of physical exertion can shut it down prematurely. This causes issues. Also, as mentioned above, point 1 can interfere.
Hmm. I sense a pattern has formed…
