#BEDM Day 23: Lessons
Things you’ve learned that school won’t teach you
1: The Universe is amazingly beautiful and cool
Star Trek insinuated that this might be so and I went and looked and yeah, sure enough, it is. I don’t actually think there is one square inch of existence that is ugly or boring. Even the vast tracts of it that look empty, aren’t. They’re full of giddy, frothing amazingness. Seriously. Go look. Do some Google searching. You won’t be disappointed.
2. It is amazing that we are capable of being amazed
We are the only animals on Earth, as far as we can tell, that are capable of discovering the amazingness described above. As awesome as tigers are, we don’t think that they look up at the sky at night and wonder what might be. It is almost a certainty that dolphins, smart as they may be, have no clue what quantum foam is. Animals are cool, but we are fucking epic.
3. It is most amazing of all that all this amazingness happened on its own
The very idea that something sat down and designed our Universe and everything in it, including us (aside from being palpably ridiculous) also I think demeans it, and us, immeasurably. I find it far more amazing and beautiful and satisfying to think that what is all around us happened entirely on its own. No intelligence required. The fact that we are intelligent enough to admire that beauty is the most amazing thing of all.
